ReCreate sets out to transform lives through fashion, with fair employment, training and support for the women who make its clothes.

The story

Erica Gadsby founded ReCreate in 2013, when the Dey Tmey sewing centre opened on the edge of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in a community that had been relocated after evictions in 2007. The label is based in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, where its collections are designed.

The workshop's small, mostly female team is paid a living wage for a 32.5-hour week and receives sewing and literacy training, plus help with childcare and schooling. ReCreate also works with other Cambodian makers, including Dorsu and Daughters, and sources fabric from suppliers in Cambodia and Thailand.

ReCreate runs alongside a Cambodian NGO and a New Zealand charitable trust, and all of its profits go back into the sewing centre and community programs. It is GOTS certified; GOTS covers organic textiles with social criteria based on ILO conventions but isn't a fair trade label, so The Labour Movement also vetted ReCreate against our fair trade standards.

Is ReCreate fair trade?

We review every brand each year.
