Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
The Global Organic Textile Standard certifies textiles made from organic fibres, and it goes well beyond the farm. Every stage that processes or trades the fabric is inspected, covering both chemical use and the working conditions of the people doing the work. Every brand on this page sells GOTS certified products, which we confirm before listing.

Here's what GOTS certification actually means
GOTS covers the whole textile supply chain, not just the cotton field. Processing stages such as spinning, knitting, dyeing and sewing, and the traders in between, are inspected by independent certification bodies on an annual cycle.
There are two label grades. 'Organic' requires at least 95% certified organic fibre, and 'made with organic' requires at least 70%. Chemical inputs are restricted, and products can be tested for residues in accredited laboratories.
GOTS also sets social criteria based on International Labour Organization conventions. They apply at every processing and manufacturing stage and include freely chosen employment, freedom of association, no child labour, safe working conditions and the payment of living wages.
What GOTS requires
| Standard | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Organic fibre | At least 70% certified organic fibre, and 95% for the 'organic' grade |
| Whole-chain certification | Every processing and trading stage is certified, not just the raw fibre |
| Chemical restrictions | Limits on chemical inputs, with residue testing in accredited labs |
| Freely chosen employment | No forced labour |
| Freedom of association | Workers can organise and bargain collectively |
| No child labour | Children may not be employed |
| Living wages | Wages must meet living-wage requirements |
| Safe and fair workplaces | Safe, hygienic conditions, no excessive hours, no discrimination and no harsh treatment |
Why this all matters
Textiles have one of the longest supply chains in everyday shopping. A T-shirt can pass through a farm, a spinner, a dyehouse and a sewing floor, often in different countries, and each step is a point where costs can be pushed onto workers or the environment.
GOTS makes those steps visible. Because certification follows the product through each stage, a GOTS label tells you something about the whole chain rather than a single point in it.
On its own it isn't a fair trade certification: it doesn't set minimum prices or trading terms. That's why the brands here are also vetted against fair trade standards before they're listed, with GOTS as one strong piece of evidence.
With and without GOTS: a quick comparison
| Without certification | With GOTS certification |
|---|---|
| 'Organic' can be an unverified claim | Organic fibre content certified, 70% minimum |
| Only the farm may be checked | Every processing and trading stage certified |
| Chemical use unknown | Restricted inputs and residue limits |
| Factory conditions unverified | Social criteria inspected on an annual cycle |

About GOTS certification
Is GOTS a fair trade certification?
Not exactly. GOTS is an organic textile standard with social criteria built in, including living wages and freedom of association. It doesn't set minimum prices or long-term trading terms the way fair trade schemes do. Brands with GOTS products on The Labour Movement are also vetted against fair trade standards before they're listed.
What's the difference between 'organic' and 'made with organic' on a GOTS label?
Products labelled 'organic' contain at least 95% certified organic fibre. 'Made with organic' means at least 70%. Both grades are certified through every processing stage, and the rest of the fibre has to stay within limits set by the standard.
How does The Labour Movement check GOTS claims?
We confirm a brand's current GOTS status before it's listed and ask for supporting documents where we need them. Every brand is also vetted against our own fair trade standards and reviewed each year, because a certification is a strong signal but not a substitute for ongoing checks.
