UPAVIM's members run their own cooperative, and their craft sales help pay for schooling, health care and childcare in their community.
The story
UPAVIM grew out of a baby-weighing program that Barb Lorraine and a group of Guatemalan women started in La Esperanza in 1989 to tackle infant malnutrition. It has since become a cooperative run by its members, now more than 75 of them.
Members work as seamstresses and artisans, and also as teachers, nurses, bakers and administrators across the cooperative's programs. Craft sales help fund a medical center, a Montessori school, a tutoring center, a library, scholarships and a bakery.
UPAVIM Crafts has been a member of the Fair Trade Federation since 1994, with a U.S. support organization in Colorado.
