It's Cactus brings folk art from Haiti and Latin America to buyers who couldn't otherwise reach it, so the artists can earn a living from their craft.
The story
It's Cactus grew from its founder Casey's travels, where she kept finding handmade art that few people outside the artists' own communities could buy. She began working with folk artists in 1993, opened a shop in Carmel, California, later that decade, and now runs It's Cactus as an online shop from Salinas.
Its Haitian metal art comes from Croix-des-Bouquets, a town known worldwide for the craft. Artists flatten used 55-gallon steel oil drums into sheets, then shape each design by hand with a hammer and chisel, working from their homes and small workshops.
It's Cactus pays the workshops in advance for orders and says it has worked with more than 100 Haitian artists since the 1990s. It is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
