The story
Founder Ginger Shields traces Intertwined back to a trip to Guatemala in 2014. The online shop opened on January 1, 2023, and the business is based in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Intertwined doesn't run its own workshops. It works with cooperatives, small workshops and home-based artisans in Guatemala, Morocco, Nepal, Uganda and India, and some pieces are finished in Greensboro by Afghan refugee seamstresses.
Intertwined says it pays artisans fairly and usually upfront; in 2023 it described paying half of each order when it's placed and the rest on completion, before shipping. It is verified by People and Planet First, which checks social enterprises, and The Labour Movement vetted it against our fair trade standards before listing it.
