Beyond Borders Collective connects shoppers with handwoven goods while giving artisans fair pay and creative control over their work.

The story

Raul Reyes, who grew up in Quito, Ecuador, and Kirsten Reyes, from Nebraska, met in Ecuador and founded Beyond Borders Collective in 2017. The business is based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kirsten first met Indigenous weavers at the market in Otavalo. Today the blankets are handcrafted by Indigenous artisans in Ecuador's highlands, and the company also works with artisans in Peru and Turkey.

The founders describe the work as a partnership, not charity: artisans get fair pay and creative control over their designs. Beyond Borders doesn't hold a third-party fair trade certification. The Labour Movement vetted it against our fair trade standards before listing it.
