SLATE + SALT works with fair trade cooperatives and small social enterprises to keep traditional techniques alive and bring artisans' work to buyers worldwide.

The story

SLATE + SALT was founded by Lyndsay Hugues, a traveler who wanted to sell one-of-a-kind handmade pieces while keeping the traditional techniques behind them alive. The brand is based in Miami.

It sources through fair trade cooperatives and small social enterprises. Its alpaca throws, scarves and hats come from Peru; its cashmere comes from Nepal, where scarves are woven by weavers with disabilities; and its towels come from a cooperative in Turkey. Some of its jewelry is made from recycled bomb remnants in Laos and Cambodia.

SLATE + SALT says its artisans are paid fairly and that sales support programs for women entrepreneurs and children's education. It doesn't hold a third-party fair trade certification. The Labour Movement vetted it against our fair trade standards before listing it.
