Matr Boomie aims to bring people and cultures closer together through products that carry India's traditional art forms into modern design.

The story

Manish Gupta and Ruchi Agrawal started Matr Boomie in 2006 from their apartment in Austin, Texas, and still lead it together. A design team in Austin works on collections that carry traditional Indian art forms into modern pieces.

Matr Boomie partners with more than 2,000 artisans in India, often through grassroots organizations. They include women's groups, minority communities, people with disabilities and isolated rural communities, working in wood, brass, bone, terracotta and upcycled materials.

Alongside fair wages, Matr Boomie invests in vocational training, literacy programs, healthcare and scholarships for artisan communities. It is a member of the Fair Trade Federation, and Green America gave it a People & Planet Award in 2018.
