Darn Good Yarn sets out to create fair, safe work for artisans while keeping textile waste out of landfills and traditional craft alive.
The story
Nicole Snow, a U.S. Air Force veteran, started Darn Good Yarn in 2008 with a few boxes of recycled yarn in a spare bedroom. While hunting for unusual fibers she came across recycled sari silk yarn, and saw that the people making it weren't being treated fairly.
Darn Good Yarn now works with women artisans in India and Nepal who turn reclaimed sari silk and other fabric into yarn, ribbon, clothing and bags. The company reports that this work has kept more than 1.2 million pounds of material out of landfills, and it describes itself as a woman- and veteran-owned small business.
Darn Good Yarn doesn't hold a third-party fair trade certification. The Labour Movement vetted it against our fair trade standards before listing it, and we review it every year.
